Tung, Lineseed Oil & Carnauba Wax

Post by Suso » Thu Feb 02, 2017 10:33 am

hi Gianluca, it is a good article!

both products are pure oils, uncooked and without minerals, but in the first oil the manufacturing process is longer and therefore costs more.

The second is an oil that has only been pressed and bottled.

You can use both, the difference is that one dries faster but is more expensive. As you can see in this photo, I usually use the expensive one because I use small amounts...

The oil that you should not buy is the one you have previously linked

Greetings, Mike here.

Been watching a lot of your youtube and finally got here today. Pls forgive what may become obvious lack of knowledge but been a corporate rat most of my career and only now getting into woodworking. I may be starting in the wrong order but my first question,

Based on the application I assume all the components and the varnish are food grade / food safe. A confirmation before I start buying would be appreciated.

hello Mike,

to apply on kitchen utensils or cutting boards it's better to use pure linseed oil, take a look at this article:

Hi Suso, I'm installing a tongue and groove pine floor and I'm considering protecting it with a natural oil based finish (instead of the hard varnish based on polyurethane).
Would you recommend your mixture for floor finishing? Or maybe a variation of it?

hello mate!
these mixtures are perfect for wooden floors, two coats of each mixture will be enough.
Carnauba wax is very hard, so it is perfect. After the last coat, you can polish to get a glossy surface.

Thanks Suso, that sounds great! You made my day :)

Moving forward, in terms of future maintenance of this wood:
a) Which mixture would you use for new coats on the top of the existing one?
b) Would the surface need some sanding? Or could the mixture be applied directly on the top of the existing one?
c) And how often would be reasonable to reapply new coats?

Much appreciated for your wonderful job and content creation. It's really helpful and inspiring!

for the maintenance, only the mixture with carnauba will be necessary.
Depending on the use, once every 2 years. You can only apply a new coat on the most worn areas, the other areas where don't you step on, can last more years.
If the wood is in good condition, you can apply the oil without sanding.
Try not to wet the floor too much when you do cleaning.

Hi,

Would there be another source than Amazon to get such oils? I'm trying to avoid them due to their practices, so I'm looking for alternatives as much as possible.
