I just re-read the whole topic and you're right, I mean it's cut too big! It seems that you have very clear how the fence tightening mechanism works.
I like your ideas, I think both can help solve these fence tightening problems.
I think you can try first to make the lower part of the piece34 length bigger, I think this may be enough. Could you upload some pics with your progress?

where should I upload them to?
Oh and also the pics will be of current state before the changes to the tightning mechanism because I will only have time to work on it again in the weekend .. ( I have a new born baby and barely have time to work on the saw..)
plus, you'll see that I built a temporrary cross cut sled just so I can use the saw already for the build process itself.
