It is true that older motors tend to have more force, but I think 1/4 is not enough. It depends on what you are going to turn, if they are pieces of small diameter would be enough, if you are going to turn bowls, you need at least one of 3/4 hp.
Regarding the revolutions, 1725 is fine!
You can start the project with the motor you have, and later change it to a more powerful one! Change will be easy.
