Making a homemade Band Saw

Post by Cole » Sat Jan 27, 2018 8:09 pm

Suso, can you share the maximum height this saw can open up to? I want to resaw lumber with it. If I think it isn't enough, can I simply make the frame larger without weakening the structure? 12" would be ideal

Making a homemade Band Saw

hello Cole!
the maximum height this saw can open up is 230mm. If you remove the work table you can cut 260mm. This design allows to make the frame longer, you can lengthen the necessary pieces until you reach 12".
Keep in mind that this way you also need a longer blade.

Making a homemade Band Saw

Post by Rematix » Sun Feb 11, 2018 3:32 pm

Hi Suso,

If you could maybe check the cut list for accuracy. If I read the plans correctly, the wheels have a diameter of 355 mm. However, the cut list for part 36 (which I understand are for the wheels) states that this part should be 340x340 mm (i.e. too small!).

For the pulleys, is my understanding correct that the cut list states the pieces 10 mm larger than the required diameter?

Thanks

hello Tilman,

you're right, thanks for letting me know.

I'm so sorry about that. I just corrected it, you can re-download the plans from my website.
I have defined the pulleys and wheels a little bigger in order to cut them easily...

Hello.

I have a 3/4 hp 15 amp 5000 rpm motor I pulled from my old table saw. I obviously can't use it at 5000 rpm. How can I figure out what pulleys to make?

hello Nicknasty,
there are too many revolutions for a band saw, and there is not enough space inside the cabinet of the band saw for the pulleys necessary to reduce the revolutions.
Maybe if you put the motor on the right side instead of the left one and more separated from the wheel it will work. You'll need a motor pulley of 50mm and a wheel pulley of 250mm.

Thanks Suso. My Dad had a 3/4 HP 1500 RPM motor in his shop that he gave me. I just purchased all the fasteners online and some of the other parts. I plan to start next week. I'll make a post of the build if you would like.

One more question. Could you tell me the dimensions of the aluminum U channel? I see it on the plans, but it's confusing the way it's listed.

hello,
you may not find the same aluminum profile, but any profile of approximate measures will serve you. About 15mm wide and 10mm high.
