Fitting circular saw to table top

Hi there, first of all well done on this great design - I'm eager to get putting mine together as soon as possible.
A question I have relates to the fitting of the circular saw. Do you simply mount it to the underside of the table top as is, or do you rout out a rebate for it to sit into?
I'm using 18mm birch ply as the top, and I'm worried that if I rout out a rebate for the saw to sit into it may weaken the board and not provide enough strength to hold the saw (I've bought the Maklita 5903 and it's a heavy beast!).
So my question is if I can rout out a rebate, what depth can I get away with, or am I best to mount it without a rebate and lose a full 18mm of the saw's cutting height?
Thanks very much.
